Wetlands Plant Species at FMEL: Red Mangrove
Rhizophora mangle
Trees up to 22m tall, sometimes found as stunted scrubby bushes. Easily recognized by the tall prop roots emanating from the branches. Reddish brown bark, with opposite elliptic leaves that are thick and leathery, dark green above and paler below. Yellow flowers clustered in groups of two or three. Propagules are long and cylindrical. Establish at or near mean low tide, but often occur at higher elevations, mixed with other mangrove species.
