Freshwater Wetlands

Freshwater wetlands dot the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory property. Trees include: Red maple (Acer rubrum), Dahoon holly (Ilex cassine), and Red bay (Persea borbonia). Saltbush (Baccharis halimifolia), wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera), and elderberry (Sambucus simpsonii) are among the shrubs.

Herbaceous vegetation varies considerably among the freshwater wetlands. Groundcovers include: Water hyssop (Bacopa sp.), cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea), spoonflower (Peltandra sp.), pickerel weed (Pontederia cordata), arrowhead (Sagittaria sp.). String lily (Crinum americanum), alligator lily (Hymenocallis palmeri), and marsh fleabane (Pluchea rosea) grow throughout the wetlands as wildflowers.
